Percival Lowell was an author, astronomer and populariser of planetary science who put forth the ideas of existence of canals and intelligent life on Mars and of the trans-Neptunian Planet X, and organized the discovery of Pluto. Should we be surprised that Mars and Pluto are very prominent in his horoscope?
Lowell’s Mars is in conjunction to Sun and his ascendant is in conjunction to Pluto, the planet that was still undiscovered at his time and that he worked to discover. Mars among other things rules carving and eyes. Lowell was obsessed with the canals of Mars, that he believed he saw. Now it is speculated that the canals he perceived may be an optical illusion or the product of the ophthalmoscopic action of his telescope making him see the blood vessels of the retina superimposed on the image he observed.
Lowell became actively interested in the Planet X and began building his observatory approximately at the time when directional Sun passed over his natal Pluto. In 1906 Percival Lowell’s observatory was built and Clyde Tombaugh, the discoverer of Pluto was born. Lowell’s equatorial and zodiacal and solar arc directions, and the secondary progression for Tombaugh’s birthdate accentuated and energized his natal Uranus, Pluto and Ascendant by situating either Sun or Mars on the former and Mercury and Neptune on the latter stimulating his pioneering spirit and intuition, and blending them with logical reasoning.
Lowell and Tombaugh never met, but the younger astronomer continued the effort of the older one and led it to success. Their horoscopes have Mars-Mars, Sun-Mars and Jupiter-Sun conjunctions that endow them with common enthusiasms and ideology. Lowell’s Jupiter contacts Tombaugh’s Sun and must have infected his reason with Jovian optimism.
When Pluto was discovered, 14 years after Lowell’s death, the transit Jupiter was in conjunction to his natal Saturn, the transit Mars formed a trine to it, his Sun was in the transit Jupiter/Saturn midpoint and his Jupiter was at the transit Sun-Mars midpoint. Generally, these aspects signify good luck and breakthrough in a successful long-term effort. Yet, the transit Pluto was on his natal IC. Since Lowell’s birth, Pluto has moved from the one horoscopic angle of horoscope chart to the next achieving a peak in its strength by house. IC lies on the social axis of the horoscope. Transiting Pluto on IC symbolizes its local socialization or limited popularity. The next time it crossed the social axis of Lowell’s chart was 2015, which symbolizes its wide socialization or international popularity. Correspondingly, there are two surges in Pluto’s popularity – after its discovery in 1930 and after the spacecraft approached it in 2015. They both seem programmed in Lowell’s chart. In 1930 Pluto made an abstract appearance and became family business for astronomers and astrologers; in 2015 it grew into a big international star.
At the time of Pluto’s discovery, the transit Pluto was just meeting the Point of death of Lowell’s chart implying that the planet and its discovery may be associated with the great beyond. This could also imply ending of his life’s mission. At the same time, the Point of life of the chart of Pluto’s discoverer was contacting the discoverer’s directional Pluto.
Lowell’s solar return chart for 1930, the year of Pluto’s discovery, is impressive. It is characterized by a total absence of tense interplanetary aspects, which is a sign of a very successful year. The solar return finds the transit Pluto exactly on Lowell’s IC and in trine to his Neptune, the transit Venus exactly on his Pluto and ascendant, the transit Jupiter on his Uranus and in sextile to his Mercury, the transit Moon in sextile to his Jupiter, the transit Saturn and Neptune in trines to his ascendant, and the transit Jupiter and Venus in his I house. Collectively these aspects are indicative of great and sudden success in Plutonian matters, perhaps in unveiling of concealed things. Percival Lowell’s solar return chart for 1930 implies discovery of Pluto that year given that it is undiscovered and other prerequisites are right. Percival Lowell transits and solar return chart appear to have been quite active 14 years after he passed away.
At the time of Pluto’s discovery Lowell’s solar directions and secondary progression situated either Sun or Mars or both of them on his Saturn whilst his minor progression placed Uranus there confirming the breakthrough in the long-term professional efforts.
The Moon is the most elevated planet in Percival Lowell’s horoscope. It is at IC and is abundantly aspected. It casts a trine aspect to Uranus and other aspects to Sun, Mars, Venus, Neptune and Node (as only the aspect to Venus is tense). Lowell’s Moon is at MC His Moon is his highest planet and is abundantly aspected. Collectively these aspects signify emotional involvement in career, popularity, success, initiatives, innovativeness and creativity perhaps at the expense of personal life. The most aspected planet in Lowell’s chart is Uranus connoting an inventive spirit.
At the time of Pluto’s discovery, the Moon of Lowell’s equatorial direction was at exact conjunction to his natal Sun. This conjunction marks a time when everything fits into place and a new chapter begins. In Lowell’s case, with his well aspected Moon at MC in Capricorn, the conjunction indicates professional achievement, which the discovery of Pluto undoubtedly is to him. Then Uranus, the planet of discovery, of Lowell’s minor progression was joining his Saturn, the planet of sustained effort indicating a discovery as a result of prolonged labour. Although he was dead from 14 years then, the projections of the sensitive degrees of his chart still operated showing that one’s deeds or horoscopic configuration can live a life of their own.
NASA’s spacecraft New Horizons sent on flyby Pluto mission was launched in 2006. The best astrological analogue to a rocket launch that planetary aspects can make is the blending of Mars and Uranus. Intriguingly, in Percival Lowell’s transit and minor progression for the launch the transit and progressive Mars is in wide conjunction to his Uranus. The astrological analogue to a discovery is blending Mercury and Uranus. The exact conjunction of transit Uranus to his Mercury takes place at the day of the launch. Astrological analogue to distant travel, spiritual quest, emotional idealism, escapism, transcendental inspiration, achieving fame by mysterious cases and their successful completion is the blending of Jupiter and Neptune. All of these characteristics are applicable to Percival Lowell’s quest of the Planet X. At the time of launching New Horizons, the transiting planets fulfilled this condition in two directions. Thus, the transit Neptune was in conjunction to his Jupiter while the transit Jupiter formed an exact trine to his Neptune.
New Horizons’ closest approach to Pluto was on July 14, 2015. At that time, the transit Pluto had arrived at Lowell’s MC, which is the horoscopic angle associated with professional realization. As mentioned above, Lowell’s Moon dwells in this highest mundane horoscopic place and disposes him to win popularity. The spacecraft’s approaching Pluto, the transit Pluto’s approaching Percival MC’ on Percival Lowell’s chart and regaining of his fame in 2015 appear amazingly synchronous processes.
At Lowell’s anniversary in 20151)at his solar return 2015, 99 years after his death and 160 years after his birth, the transit Pluto had risen to the highest place in his chart and situated exactly on its MC indicating that 2015 is the pinnacle of his professional effort. Meanwhile the New Horizons spacecraft was approaching Pluto, the discovery of which was the greatest contribution of Percival Lowell to planetary science. Then for the first time the Sun of his equatorial solar arc direction had progressed to an exact trine to his natal Pluto signifying positive actualization, transformation, new beginning and re-embodiment of the Plutonian issue. The same is valid also for his zodiacal directions in which either Mars or Sun or both of them form the trine. On Lowell’s solar return 2015, the tertiary progression’s Moon invigorates his natal Pluto by exact conjunction while the minor progression’s Moon is in conjunction to the transit Pluto as well as to his natal Moon. The Moon-Pluto conjunction is an important feature of the chart of the Pluto’s discoverer Clyde Tombaugh.
Percival Lowell’s directional Pluto is also inventive and pioneering due to its directional interaction with Uranus. In Lowell’s chart, Uranus is 11° ahead of Pluto in the zodiac2)and both planets Uranus and Pluto are energized by conjunction to lunar node or ascendant. Although Pluto moves about three times slower through the zodiac than Uranus, in Lowell’s equatorial directions3)equatorial direction and solar arc equatorial direction of Percival Lowell’s horoscope it moves faster than Uranus. As a result, Pluto was slowly approaching Uranus. It was 2° behind Uranus at Pluto’s discovery and caught up with it during 1953-1954 or nearly a hundred years after Lowell’s’ birth. A late discovery epitomises the slow advance of Pluto toward Uranus and their fusion that takes place in the equatorial directions of Percival Lowell’s horoscope.
In 2015, Pluto with or without Uranus of Lowell’s equatorial and equatorial solar arc directions had moved to a trine to his natal Saturn. This was the second favourable meeting of the two directional planets after their union in 1930 that was synchronized with Pluto’s discovery. Once again, it indicates a breakthrough in longstanding professional endeavours.
Lowell’s last Jupiter return before 2015 was on November 20th, 2009. It was very favourable and prophesied fame of a pioneer within next decade. It situated the transit Uranus exactly on Lowell’s Sun, the transit Moon on his Moon, the transit Sun in trine to his Mars, hence Sun, and transit Pluto in exact trine to his natal Pluto.
Thus in 2015 the transit Pluto was at the professional pinnacle of Lowell’s horoscope, his natal Pluto was maximally and favourably energized by directional Sun and Mars whilst the directional Pluto is maximally constructive. Aspects of Pluto in Lowell’s chart, transits to it and progressions to it are very pronounced and descriptive of his attitude toward the still undiscovered planet as well as of the development of Pluto’s issue for the next century and a half. They are so indicative of the planet’s story of discovery that Lowell’s horoscope could be used to predict the time of Pluto’s discovery and of sending a spaceflight to it. This exemplifies how the energy of one’s horoscopic structure can outlive his physical body.
Percival Lowell’s horoscope continues to be synchronised with mundane events 99 years after his life has ended and 160 years after his birth. His spiritual legacy still lives on. The people that it has absorbed embody it in flesh.
